Why does my product look different from the mockup?
While our mockups are designed to be as realistic as possible, they’re still digital previews and don’t guarantee that the final printed product will look exactly the same.
Mockups show how your design may appear, but differences can occur due to printing methods, fabric color, and ink behavior.
To get the most accurate preview, we recommend:
- Previewing your design in CMYK color mode in the Design Maker
- Ordering product samples to see how your design looks in real life
Why printed designs may look different
Direct-to-garment (DTG) printing and white underbase
For DTG printing on colored or dark garments, Printful uses a white underbase. This white layer is printed underneath your design so colors appear brighter and more visible on non-white fabrics—similar to priming a canvas before painting.
Because of this, the final print is a combination of your design colors and white ink, which can slightly change how colors appear compared to what you see on screen.
Designs that may not print as expected
Some design styles don’t translate well to DTG printing, especially when a white underbase is involved.
Semi-transparent designs
Effects like:
- Drop shadows
- Fades and gradients
- Semi-transparent elements
may appear grainy, washed out, or discolored on colored or dark garments. These effects often look different in print than they do on screen.
Black designs on black garments
Black designs printed on black clothing may look grayish or dull rather than deep black. This happens because the white underbase affects how black ink is printed on dark fabrics.
For best results, we recommend:
- Avoiding subtle tone-on-tone designs (for example, black on black or blue on blue)
- Using designs with enough contrast against the garment color
All-over print (AOP) products
For all-over print products, exact design placement isn’t guaranteed. Minor shifts can happen during production, especially around seams and edges, so the final product may differ slightly from the mockup preview.
More accurate mockup previews
In the Design Maker, you may see a “What your print will look like” preview option. When enabled, this adjusted mockup gives a closer representation of how the final print may appear, taking printing characteristics into account.
